UNKNOWN LOVERS probes the possibility of retaining subtle narrative information through seemingly distortive transformations between analogue and digital formats. Based on real analogue loveletters to former lovers of mine, I fed .doc formats of these letters through a sound-any-file algorithm written by Philipp Drieger. The resulting soundfiles were again transcribe as analogue notation, which was fed again through an algorithm, finally visualizing the notation.
The resulting „totems“ are abstract manifestations of the essence of each relationship. Although the narrative, personal information should have been dissolved through the transformative iterations, the majority of the audience were able to surprisingly exactly re-tell – without further clues – details and interpretations of character, type and theme of each relationship.
